How to tell the suits apart
- Bams (bamboo) show green and red sticks. The 1 Bam is usually a bird, not a stick.
- Craks (characters) show a Chinese numeral on top and the red character 萬 underneath.
- Dots (circles) show round coins. Count them to get the number.
- Most American sets also print a small number in the corner of each suit tile, so you don't have to read the Chinese numerals.
The honor tiles
- Winds: North, East, West and South. American sets add a corner letter (N, E, W, S).
- Dragons: Red (中), Green (發) and White, called Soap. Each dragon "belongs" to a suit: Red with Craks, Green with Bams, Soap with Dots.
- Flowers: all eight are interchangeable, whatever picture they show.
- Jokers: eight wild tiles. See the joker quiz for when you can use them.
Tile artwork varies from set to set. Ours is drawn to show the standard layout.
